Kung Food Express Café is the latest manifestation of the growing trend in healthful eating and living that is centered on plant-based food.
Kung Food offers a new dining experience...one that combines amazing taste and nutrition in a convenient format.
Our philosophy mirrors the ancient Chinese practice of Kung Fu, which illustrates the equal importance of body, mind, and spirit in attaining overall health. If true mastery is to be achieved, all elements of a person's life must be in balance. Kung Food is here to provide its customers with nourishment for the body, amidst an environment that promotes the cultivation of spirit and mind!

Kung Food Express Café's menu revolves around organic plant-based foods, using only the finest ingredients available. Our food is created without the use of chemical preservatives, dyes, white flour, or refined white or brown sugar. Our chefs relish the challenge and love to show people that these empty ingredients are unnecessary for great-tasting food! Our goal is to provide our customers with a convenient, healthy vegetarian alternative to mainstream food.
Kung Food Express Café uses biodegradable cutlery, plates, and bowls. Since Kung Food's waste food scraps are given to local farmers for composting, and the warm water we use to scrub our pots and pans is heated by the sun, a purchase at Kung Food is a vote for environmentally aware yet cost-effective business practices.

Kung Food Express Café has a rich history. This wonderful space used to house the original Kung Foods, a vegetarian restaurant started in the 1970s. Kung Foods evolved into the Vegetarian Zone and became a well-known destination for healthy dining. After 20 years of serving the San Diego community, the Vegetarian Zone closed its doors and remained vacant, awaiting further evolution.

Kung Food Express Café seeks to bring new life and reinvigorate the principles of healthy dining and environmental awareness established by its predecessors through a four-stage development plan.
Phase 1 is the opening of a quick-service restaurant in the Southern Building on the property featuring both traditional and creative new vegetarian recipes.
Phase 2 is the opening of a production kitchen in the Northern Building on the property to produce an exciting new line of tasty specialty "grab-and-go" items like lasagna, sandwiches, fresh-baked breads, and gourmet desserts for sale here, and for catering.
Phase 3 is the opening of a drive-through window service to complete our vision of a healthy and convenient fast-food alternative.
Phase 4 complements the "express" aspect of our establishment by creating a full-service dinner menu that features inventive, delectable and nutritious entrées made to order and brought fresh to your table.
