George "accidentally" drops his camera equipment (circa 1953; actual size approx. 6.2 x 9.0 in. (15.7 x 23.0 cm.)). Did the other photog capture a moment that was completely unplanned? I'm skeptical. The more likely explanation follows from what was common practice in the '50s: often photogs would stage a picture to produce some comedic effect—or, in some cases, a tragic one. Today, such editorial license would get a photographer fired. (Note the very cool Oldsmobile Rocket 88 that my dad drove. A few years later he would ride the emerging trend toward imported cars, and trade in the Olds for a 1958 Renault Dauphine from France—which, in many ways, represented a colossal step backward.) Scanned from a xerograph provided by Delmar Watson. Lightly retouched to repair minor delamination on jacket pocket and brick background, then desaturated to remove color artifacts introduced through xerography.
